Celebrating 25 Years of IEGS
This academic year, Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet Södermalm is celebrating its 25th Anniversary. We have certainly grown since opening back in 1999. Our population is now heading towards 700 students and our staff totals just over 70!
When we started school this August I announced that each month when we are in school on the 25th, we would recognise our anniversary year in a special way in school. This September, our first 25th day in school, we kicked off the celebrations by having our entire school participate in a group photo in the shape of the number 25 in front of the school building. We were successful in this fun challenge, displaying both efficiency and cooperation in creating a “human 25” together. Twenty five years ago, the aerial shot itself would have been a challenge, but not in 2024, with a drone and a pair of steady hands to take our group picture. Can you see me with my leadership team in my white sneakers?
As we continue to celebrate our 25th anniversary, we have planned a number of exciting activities and opportunities for staff and students recognised on the 25th of each school day month. We hope that you will join and follow us in celebrating our amazing school and its history.
IEGS was founded in 1999 by Ms Barbara Bergstöm, who was also the first principal of the school. It was a modest beginning, with two classes, in total 56 students, in the Swedish national programmes, Natural Sciences (NA) and Social Sciences (SA), sharing a section of the building in Internationella Engelska Skolan Enskede, and being taught in English by a group of 8 devoted educators. The goal was to provide quality education with an English specialisation. As IEGS expanded, in 2008 we moved to our current location in Södermalm. The Economy programme with Law specialisation (EK) and the Aesthetics programme with either Art or Drama specialisations (ES) were introduced and student numbers totalled more than 400, with Dr Benedikt as principal. With the introduction of the House System, our pastoral program expanded promoting school spirit and allowing students to embrace opportunities for personal development and student leadership. I took over as principal in 2013 and saw the introduction of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) to our school, in line with our strong, international profile. Our promise to our students remains unchanged 25 years on, as we continue to build on the innovative spirit that founded our school, and the steadfast goal to give our students a transformative education in a safe and calm environment, for them to become Global Citizens of the future.
Let's celebrate IEGS!
