IEGS to host the European Youth Parliament regional session

By Editor

Over the weekend, IEGS will have the honor of hosting the prestigious European Youth Parliament, a non-partisan and independent educational project dedicated to encouraging active European citizenship and motivating students to get engaged in European politics.

The EYP describes have this to say of themselves: "Today the EYP is one of the largest European platforms for political debate, intercultural encounters, political educational work and the exchange of ideas among young people in Europe. The EYP consists of a network of 36 European associations and organisations in which thousands of young people are active in a voluntary capacity. The entire network organises about 200 events every year."

Last spring, IEGS students won their first EYP national session debates, taking them to the international debates in Munich, Germany. I had the opportunity to follow the IEGS team of five, along with five students from Kungsholmens gymnasium, to participate in the EYP international debates. Resolutions were drawn up by various student committees which, if passed by parliamentary debate, would be presented to the European Commission for consideration. Having seen firsthand what the EYP is and does, I can say that if any event is life changing for students, this is it.

On returning home from Munich, Yasmin Dinar (who participated in the International session), along with a number of other IEGS students, expressed interest in hosting one of this year's regional sessions at the school. Needless to say, it has required a lot of initiative, effort and planning on the part students to make this happen.

If you are unfamiliar with EYP, now is your chance to get to know what it is all about. Delegates from other schools of the greater Stockholm area will begin arriving tomorrow, Friday, and stay at IEGS until Sunday. More information about the event, administered by Yasmin Dinar and Sana Ariai, can be found on the EYP Website. Get to know what some of your fellow students have been preparing for these past months!

Winners of this regional session will participate in the nationals, to be held in Göteborg.
