Promoting student voice at IEGS through school council
Student voice inspires and empowers students to engage in their learning and the decision making that takes place in the school.
It is important that our students get to know that their expertise, opinions and ideas are valued in all aspects of school life. Student voices can be heard at all levels of the school. One of the formal approaches to student voice at IEGS is School Council.
At IEGS, all mentor classes vote for two class representatives at the beginning of the academic year. This is an opportunity for students to develop the following skills within this role, if they are fully invested in the process:
- Communication skills - able to clearly share your classes Klassråd feedback
- Open-minded - speaking in a professional environment, expressing your views but also valuing other perspectives
- Team-working skills - working collaboratively with other class reps
- Leadership - a positive role model, regular school attendance and representative of everyone in your class
- Problem-solving skills - finding creative & viable solutions rather than merely stating problems or concerns
- Motivation experience - benefiting entire school community rather than personal gain (or pleasing friends)
- Organisational skills - regular attendance to School Council meetings and overseeing Klassråd
The School Council meets five times in the year, with Mr Theding, the Vice Principal, and Mr Mahadeo, the Student Development Coordinator, present at each meeting. A chairperson is voted in annually to undertake the role of running the meetings, taking minutes and formulating the agenda. All class representatives are invited to attend, as well as a representative from the Student Union.
Congratulations to the School Council Chairperson elected for this academic year, Neville Bhinday NV2A and vice-chairperson, Maja Rogoza IB3B.
School Council 2024 is now in session.
