Representing IEGS at the Model United Nations (MUN) Inter-School Debate

IEGS Blog | 13 November 2024

On the 11th and 12th of October, IEGS proudly participated in the Model United Nations (MUN) Inter-School Debate hosted by ISSR, an enriching experience that brought together representatives from four schools. As the only delegate from IEGS, this competition provided a unique opportunity to showcase skills in diplomacy, negotiation, and public speaking.

The topic of discussion—"Mitigating Economic Disruption due to Oil Dependence"—was timely, and provided a perspective from many of Stockholm’s youth, who engaged in calm yet critical debates with talented peers. This debate allowed the representatives from different schools to delve deep into national diplomacies, foreign policies, and financial aspects of reducing oil production and consumption, while also considering the economic repercussions that would follow.

Throughout the debate, which lasted for 5-6 hours, delegates represented different countries, and strived to propose innovative solutions, while also taking into account their nation’s policies and stance on world issues. Personally, I had the privilege of advocating for the United States’ position, being a large power, and emphasising the importance of investing and exporting renewable technologies to better the climate crisis, while also strengthening international relationships.

Overall, the dynamic nature of the motion-led debate enhanced my understanding of global issues, and shed light on the complexity of not only striving to fight global warming, but the intricacy of the situation, where countries like Saudi Arabia and India are dependent on oil for their economies.

This MUN experience was invaluable, and stresses the significance of dialogue in addressing global challenges, as well as teaching delegates how to write formal resolutions in the same way the United Nations writes them.

It also highlighted the commitment of IEGS students to engage with contemporary issues and contribute meaningfully to discussions on sustainability and economic stability.

I would like to say a big thank you to all staff from ISSR that made the event happen, the Chairs of the debate, and to IEGS, for supporting its students in this debate.

Thank you IEGS!
